Bury Me at Makeout Creek is the third album by Japanese-American artist Mitski, released originally on Double Double Whammy on November 11th 2014. The album was reissued with four new bonus tracks on April 7th 2015 through Don Giovanni Records. In 2016, the album was released under Mitski's new label Dead Oceans.
The sound of the album is starkly different to her first self released albums Lush and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business; where the self released albums incorporated piano and orchestral elements, Bury Me at Makeout Creek is more guitar focused, in an indie rock style. Talking about the creation of the album in interviews, Mitski has expressed that she realised she wanted her next album to be more suited towards live performance in the indie rock and punk scene she was involved in, as well as wanting to "have fun" more with its creation.
Mitski learned to play and write songs on guitar for Bury Me, having previously only played piano and drums, and the album was recorded in houses and makeshift studios.
