One Little Independent Records (2022) UK, US
Vespertine is the fifth studio album by Icelandic musician Bjork, released on August 27, 2001, on One Little Indian Records. It was recorded at locations in Spain, Iceland and the United States in 2000. The album peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200 in the US and at number 8 on the UK Albums Chart. Three singles were released from Vespertine: "Hidden Place," "Pagan Poetry," and "Cocoon." The record was certified Gold in Canada, France and the UK.
With the foresight of the music being downloaded and played on computers, Bjork chose to use instruments that would not be compromised during the download process. These instruments include the harp, celesta, clavichord, and music boxes. Strings are also heavily featured. Vespertine sees Bjork creating an introverted, quiet world of swirling microbeats and personal lyrics. It was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 2002 Grammy Awards. Stylus Magazine placed it 36th on their 'Top 50 Albums: 2000-2005.' Vespertine was also selected as one of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
