On a small island city that you can cover in an hour, and where the close-knit rock scene of about 200 people are almost exclusively playing fast-paced math-rock, metal and emo, Vegtable asked themselves the simple question, what if we did the complete opposite to everyone else?

Inspired by classic 90s indie-rock acts like Yo La Tengo, Red House Painters, and Duster, and the creative challenge of not referencing any songs released after 2000 (there are exceptions), Vegtable’s music is both strange and comforting; packed with space, yet rich in allusion. It’s detached and always wears sunglasses, with a bassist/vocalist in Jeriel Lim who will never disclose the meaning of her lyrics, a rare breed of drummer in Shenen Khoo who prefers to play as little possible, sometimes not at all, and a guitarist/vocalist in Daniel Borces whose musical obsessions run so deep that he flew all the way to London in March 2026 just to attend Thurston’s Moore’s Cafe Oto residency.

The follow-up to last year’s debut Through The Motions, and the first released via Leeds-based DIY label Field Work Recordings (Bug Teeth, Floco), Hit By A Car doesn’t deliver the kind of high-octane road collisions of flying bodies and shattered debris, but the kind the Daniel himself experienced watching his friend (and former bassist) finally suffer from the habit of always using his phone while riding his bike: “I was thinking, “should I alert him?”, but something in me made me want to see what would happen. And true enough, he just crashed into the car. It was crazy how slow the whole thing was. It wasn’t like the movies. He kind of fell. The front wheel rolled across the road. I can still remember the whole process. There was the awkwardness afterwards. I like the concept of being hit by a car, but it being so slow…”

Much like the not-so-feted crash, the record itself exists in a tension of action and anticipation. Opener ‘That’s Cool’ lilts like a lullaby. ‘Repetitions’ hangs stock-still in air, like a question without a response, the band deliberately trying to strip every part back as far as they can. While ‘Stay’ is positively breezy by relation, the band took steps to add in dissonant notes to maintain a certain level of disquiet, and you can still hear the echoes in the spaces left by each thread of twanging guitar.

Recorded in key Singapore hang-out spot PK Records - and soaking in the seediness of the surrounding red light district (“Singapore is a super clean country. This area feels like a different Universe”), the album was also conceived by a rejigged line-up. Jeriel Lim, who met the band as an intern working on album one and joined halfway into the creation of two, adds pristine vocals songwriting aloofness, and even mixed the whole thing too. Picking up a bass just to play in the band, musical suggestions had to be conveyed in abstract, rather than musical, terms. Say, imagine you’re soundtracking a Charlie Chaplin Film - “if you play one of his films over Phone Calls’, it makes sense”, Daniel is keen to point out.

Tracklist
1 - That’s Cool
2 - Phone Calls
3 - Right There
4 - Repetitions
5 - The Bliss
6 - Pastor
7 - Stay
8 - Dogs
9 - Take Steps
